The pop goddess, Cher once surprised the world when she married Gregg Allman just after her divorce from Sonny Bono and she surprised her fans more when she filed a divorce after ten days of their marriage for Gregg’s problem with alcohol. Though they later reconciled and Gregg promised to clean up his act and kick his bad habits.
She was married to her first husband, Sonny Bono from 1964-1975 and they had a child. Later in 1975, she married Gregg Allman with whom she has another child but they got divorced in 1979. She was born on 20th May in 1946 in El Centro, California, in the United States. Her parents are John Sarkisian and Georgia Holt.
She is of English, Cherokee, German, and Irish descent. She appeared as an extra in the television show, The Adventure of Ozzie and Harriet. In 1962, she met Sonny Bono and he introduced her to the producer, Phil Spector, and her first single, Ringo, I Love You was released but it was unsuccessful.
In late 1964, Sonny and Cher emerged as a duo, Caesar & Cleo and released their poorly received singles like Do You Wanna Dance, Let the Good Times Roll, etc. Her debut album, All Really Want to Do was released in 1965 and it reached number 16 on the Billboard 200.
After that, they gained their popularity after their song, I Got You Babe that reached number one on the US and UK charts. Simultaneously, she continued her solo career and her single, Bang Bang that released in 1966 became her first million-seller song. In the 1970s, she became a television personality and her shows were Cher and The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour.
In 1979, she launched a comeback with the disco album, Take Me Home. In 1982, she made her Broadway debut with the productions of Jimmy Dean, Come Back to the Five and Dime, etc. She also appeared in several films like Silkwood, Mask, Moonstruck, Chasity, Zookeeper, etc. and she won the Academy Award for her role in the film, The Witches of Eastwick.
Her well-received albums are Cher, Love Hurts, Heart of Stone, etc. She inducted 2002-2005 Living Proof: The Farewell Tour that became one of the highest-grossing concert tours of all time. She returned to films in 2018 with the comedy, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again after her last role in Burlesque in 2010.
Her album, Dancing Queen that released in 2018 debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200. Apart from winning the Academy Award, she received the Emmy Award, Grammy Award, People’s Choice Award, Echo Award, and many more.
